Understanding Float Switches

Float switches are a reliable and dependable choice for level monitoring. This article goes in-depth on the different types and solutions.

What is a Float Switch?

A float switch is a sensor that monitors liquid levels inside a tank or sump. As the liquid rises or falls, the float moves — triggering a switch to open or close an electrical circuit.

It’s a simple, reliable way to:

  • Avoid overflow or dry-run conditions
  • Automate pump control or alarm systems
  • Maintain consistent fluid levels

How it Works

  1. The float physically rises or falls with the fluid.
  2. At a preset threshold, that movement actuates a switch (open or closed).
  3. That switch can then start/stop a pump, send an alert, or trigger another control point.

Choosing the Right Switch – Key Considerations

  • Media compatibility (resistant materials for corrosive fluids)
  • Amp rating — control floats vs pump-duty floats
  • Proper installation & clearance — allow room for movement
  • Redundancy — stocking spare switches

Real-World Applications

  • Pump control (turn on/off)
  • High/low level alarms
  • Sewage lift stations
  • HVAC condensate monitoring
  • Aquaculture water control
  • Agricultural irrigation systems
  • Chemical storage tanks

Common Issues & Quick Fixes

  • Float movement blocked by debris or buildup
  • Incorrect material causing corrosion
  • Damaged float or shaft
  • Wiring or switch misconfiguration
